STEP-BY-STEP

  • Support: Art Spectrum Colourfix Sanded Pastel Paper
  • Media: Caran D'Ache Neocolor II Water Soluble Wax Pastels/Crayons, Prismacolor Colored Pencils (Verithin, Premiere & Lightfast)
  • Tools: Gray Paper Stumps and Colour Shapers

Line Drawing

The original graphite drawing is transferred onto Colourfix paper with Verithin colored pencil.

First Petal

  • Color mapping is accomplished on the cool zone with sharpened Neocolors.
  • Colors are blended on the warm zone with a Colour Shaper.
  • Details and nuances are added with colored pencils (Premiere & Lightfast) using the cool zone for layering and the warm zone for blending with a paper stump.

Second Petal

  • Color mapping is accomplished on the cool zone with Neocolors.
  • Blending is done on the warm zone with a Colour Shaper.
  • Details and nuances are added with colored pencils using the cool zone for layering and the warm zone for blending with a paper stump.

Finishing Touches

Details and nuances of the background are layered with colored pencils on the cool zone and blended on the warm zone. The edges of the flower are softened with a paper stump on the warm zone.

Petal: Wax Foundation

White colored pencil (or white Art Stx) is burnished on the warm zone all over the petal to buil a wax foundation.
This will help with subsequent layering and blending.

Petal: Layering

Local colors are layered on the cool zone over the white by using the side of the pencil.

Petal: Blending

Blending is accomplished on the warm zone with a paper stump using a circular motion.

Blue Pebble: Layering & Blending

Dark blue and black are layered on the warm zone and blended with a paper stump using a circular motion. Lilac and white are layered and blended to create the lighter values.

Blue Pebble: Speckling

Four different colored pencils are lightly grated on a coarse sand paper.
The speckles are then distributed over the blue pebble and burnished into the substrate.
This is accomplished on the warm zone by rolling a brayer over tracing paper.
